Abstract

This volume gives an exegetical analysis of the post-resurrection stories in Luke 24 as narratives about Jesus' appearances and disappearances. In the book two different perspectives have been used. Part one is on the frontline of scientific discourse. The Lukan text is analyzed via a theoretical model -a model of mental imagination- which is derived from cognitive linguistics. Three analytical steps are taken: a deictic analysis, an analysis of the perspective and an analysis of the relationship between figure and ground. In part two the same text is studied from a sociological point of view: an analysis of the background of Jesus' death, his burial and his existence after death. What distinguishes this part of the study from most other exegetical studies is the attention to the reception of the texts within Hellenistic culture.

Abstract

This composite, post-colonial and multi-dimensional volume contains sixteen original essays by distinguished Jewish and Christian Scripture scholars on a wide range of perspectives on the relation between Jesus and women as portrayed in the New Testament Gospels, as historically re-constructed in the context of Second Temple Judaisms and of Mediterranean society, as well as in present actualizations. The contributions reflect the different social locations of interpreters from all continents and testify to the richness of methods employed in biblical interpretation at the end of the 20th century, ranging from literary approaches (narrative criticism, reader response criticism, intertextuality), historical-critical methods, archaeology and social-scientific interpretation to cultural studies and film theory. By addressing new questions and searching for answers on untrodden paths the vital scholarship on Jesus and women will be re-viewed, enriched, and challenged.

Abstract

Troeltsch's struggle with historicism sets the stage for a proposal that Christology be done from within and from ahead . Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics and Schleiermacher's experiential theology inform a Christology from within that is rooted in tradition and experience, while Pannenberg's notion of proleptic eschatological fulfilment serves as resource for a Christology from ahead . This volume develops a hermeneutical Christology that takes into account the historical contingency of knowledge, and seeks a Christology beyond the objectivism of timeless truth and the relativism of absolutised contextuality. The book is concluded with an examination of the convergence of critical traditionality, experiential appropriation and eschatological prolepsis in the Christology of the apostle Paul. The author explores how Christology might respond to the scandal of universality in postmodernity without defaulting on its claim to transcontextual referentiality.

Abstract

This study traces the debate surrounding Luke's use of the Gospel of Mark and special sources, such as Proto-Luke, in a section of the passion narrative (Lk 22,54-23,25). The survey covers roughly the period from the 1880's to 1997. Part I details the development from P. Feine to the 1960's. Part II begins with G. Schneider continuing up through 1997. In treating each scholar's position, the author reviews their underlying Synoptic theory, their source theory in the passion in general, then the trial of Pilate, and finally the trial before Herod. Part III is devoted to an interpretation of Lk 23,6 - 16. Part IV contains the list of abbreviations, the bibliography, and three appendices: (1) Special LQ vocabulary and constructions according to J. Weiss; (2) Lukan priority theories; and (3) the Gospel of Peter and its relation to the Herod pericope. Part IV concludes with the name index. The Lukan Passion Narrative will be particularly useful to those concerned with Luke's redactional technique, Source theories, Minor Agreements, and the history of exegesis.
